Slovakia hosts about 60.000 refugees from Ukraine. But discontent over the aid to Ukrainians is growing. Slovakia is vulnerable to Russian fake news, and elections are coming up. These can bring to power a party that is more critical to Ukraine and the EU.

According to public opinion research published by think thanks BPI and Stem earlier this month, 44.2% of Slovaks think that Ukrainians harm the Slovak economy and culture, and that Bratislava should not give money to Ukraine.

“No more than 22% of Slovaks considers themselves as part of the west, and that is bizarre. In Poland, which is culturally more like the east, 50% of the Poles says they are part of the West”… “The ‘Slovak feeling’ is deeply rooted. 20 years ago, the Government successfully introduced reforms to become part of the EU and NATO. Half of the population was always opposed to this. And Slovakia is slowly turning into a country that is increasingly Eurosceptic.”
